4. Paragraphing: essay writing vs. encyclopedic writing

  • Body paragraphs (class packet, pages 10-11) 
5. Using E.R. Helford's analysis of the themes in Wild Seed to write encyclopedic paragraphs.  Online handout HERE.

Assignments due 10/14
  1. Read Wild Seed, chapters 7-10. (Up to page 133 on the pdf on Blackboard; the book is also on reserve in the Library, together with the other volumes in the trilogy).
  2. Log on to Wikipedia. Go to your Sandbox, click on Edit, and create a Level 2 Heading titled "Wild Seed, Chapters 7-10" (25 points).  In your own words ONLY, write a 150 to 200-word summary of what happens in these chapters. Do NOT quote. Do NOT closely paraphrase summaries from outside sources, as this is against Wikipedia policy, as explained in the handout "Avoiding plagiarism on Wikipedia." You may want to preview the page before clicking "Save page."
  3. MAKE SURE YOU ARE LOGGED IN to Wikipedia. Complete the Wikipedia training by clicking here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Training/For_students (this training will take about 1 hour. Once you have completed it, your status of the Wikipedia Course Dashboard will change to "Training Complete."
  4. Complete this Paraphrasing and Quoting Test (5 points). Reading HERE and also in Blackboard.
